Knights of Momus begin Mardi Gras countdown with den party

GALVESTON — The oldest Mardi Gras krewe on the island started the countdown to this year's festivities with its annual den party on Saturday.

Members of the Knights of Momus gathered at their float barn for a casual affair a week before the big events arrive in Galveston.

The den party offered many their first glimpse of the floats that will be the stars of the Knights of Momus Grand Night Parade on Feb. 14. This year's Momus theme is Knights in Old Shanghai, so the floats had a touch of China in each. There was a Giant Panda eating bamboo on one float while another featured a Chinese dragon. The Knights of Momus will gather again Friday for the president's reception, hosted by Momus president Anthony Brown. The Momus Grand Coronation ball will be held on Saturday at the Grand 1894 Opera House.
