The Knights of Momus on July 20 held the Kings Affair at the Galveston Artillery Club, 3102 Ave. O.
Momus members and guests gathered to honor past kings and future duchesses. It’s never too early for this elite group of men and women to gather in unity, while looking forward to and planning for the 2025 Mardi Gras celebrations.
This year, Knights of Momus will celebrate The Emerald City, with “Mardi Gras in Oz” led by 2024-2025 krewe president Craig Kovacevich, and ball chair couple Michael and Janet Wegner.
This year’s theme is both special and timely for several reasons. First, after two decades as one of the most beloved and enduring musicals on the stage, “Wicked” makes its long-awaited journey to the big screen as a spectacular, generation-defining cinematic event. As moviegoers around the world flock to theaters to watch what happened in the land of Oz before Dorothy dropped in, eyes will definitely focus on the island as more and more people discover the tie of Galveston-born filmmaker, King Vidor to “The Wizard of Oz.”
Vidor’s iconic shots of Judy Garland singing “Over the Rainbow,” coupled with his unique style of showcasing characters with inner strength, are inspired by his personal experience as survivor of the 1900 Storm that killed more than 6,000 people on the island. He was 6 years old when the storm struck.
And, while there might be have been some ambiguity if Dorothy’s adventures in Oz were a dream or a real journey, it’s certain King Frivolous CIX will have Momus members and their guests proclaiming,“There’s no place like home, especially when it’s Mardi Gras time on Galveston Island.”
